part 4
Chapter 8
Thesis: Knowledge is ever growing so we must be able to identify sources of existing knowledge in order to grow
Observations
1. "The use of existing knowledge is essential in order to do a successful literature review" (Grinnell 168). We have to learn from the past or else we will just keep on repeating it forever as it will be impossible to grow. This mentality of learning from the past is how we humans have gotten to the point we are at now.
2. Their is an ridiculous amount of knowledge out their in the world. "Finding existing knowledge is indeed exciting. However, without careful planning and a well-thought-out search strategy, searching for existing knowledge in this electronic era can easily become a daunting task" (Grinnell 176). You can't just dive in with no plan and think things will go well for you.
3. Already discovered information can be gotten from a lot of different sources each with their own benefits. "In general, information can be found in many places" (Grinnell 168).
Chapter 9
Thesis: You not only have to use past knowledge but also have to make sure that it is actually useful with what you are trying to do.
Observations
1. To make sure you use the best information available you have to be able to appraise it. "To effectively judge the quality of the existing evidence found and decide whether a report piece of information is good enough or appropriate to use, critical appraisal skills are absolutely a necessity" (Grinnell 186).
2. Evidence comes in an innumerable amount of forms and as every one is different there is no one way to go about looking at it. "Among research scholars in social work and other disciplines, there is debate about the types of evidence that are considered "the best." Their is no agreed-upon or universal way to rate evidence" (Grinnell 193).
3. With so many kinds of evidence we have to take care when looking at them. Like people no two kinds of evidence are the same so it would be wrong to treat them as such "Because various types of evidence possess unique characteristics evaluation criteria specific to each type should be used in evaluating the quality of evidence" (Grinnell 197).
Chapter 10
Thesis: Evidence-based practices are useful all across social work.
Observations
1. "Evidence-based practice is a framework purposely designed to help socail workers operate efficiently and effectively using the technology recently developed within our new global information age" (Grinnell 202). There is little point to doing a study to help a person or group of people if they will not be alive when it is completed.
2. It is impotent to know as much as we can about the evidence as possible so we can glean both positives and negatives from it. "More often then not, the evidence about a diatonic assessment instrument or effect of a treatment effects possible harmful ones as well" (Grinnell 204)
3. Asking questions that don't do anything for anyone are nothing more then fun thought experiments, but are just a waste of time. "The questions we formulate should be questions that are important to clients and those that emerge from our daily practices" (Grinnell 211).
Chapter 11
Thesis: chapter eleven covers the issues that can occur when being an evidence-based practitioner.
Observations
1. Not only do social workers have a moral duty to be accountable they also have a legal one. "In addition, social workers and other professionals working without empirically based practices are at risk for increased malpractice suits" (Grinnell 220).
2. "Because social workers must integrate multiple perspectives and sources of information, critically thinking becomes a prerequisite for engaging in evidence-based practices" (Grinnell 221). You have to be able to understand other peoples points of view in order to get good information about them.
3. Science is critically important to evidence-based practitioners. "For the empirical social worker, theory, practice, and evaluation are all part of one intervention process" (Grinnell 231).
Question: How much should we judge evidence against belief?
