Part 2
chapters 3

Thesis: Chapter three focuses on the quantitative approach to research that focuses on numerical information on subjects.
Observations
1. While objectivity is key it is not actually possible to be completely objective in the real world because of peoples natural biases. "complete objectivity is rarely possible in social work research despite the many strategies that have been developed over the years to achieve it" (Grinnell 61). We are only humans and humans make mistakes no mater how hard we try not to.
2. When conducting a study it becomes important to keep in mind the limitations of it or you might accidentally give information that actually harms people in unintended way. "While you may be better informed at the conclusion of your study, you will not have found the magic cure to alleviate your clients' struggles and suffering by means of only one research study" (Grinnell 77).
3. Their are five steps within the quantitative approach to research each one leading into the next in a loop. They go identify problem & select variables to study, review and evaluate relevant literature, design the study, address relevant issues, select measuring instruments, select sample, collect data, analyze data, disseminate study's findings, incorporate study's findings into practices. "The most important thing to remember is that all steps in figure 3.2 are highly intertwined to various degrees" (Grinnell 63).

chapter 4

Thesis: chapter four focused on the qualitative approach of using data that contains words, diagrams and the like.
Observations:
1. Qualitative data is processed by whoever is doing the research so this means that the person in question has to connect with the subject on some level. "You want to have some understanding, for example, of what it is like to be a client of social services before you launch into a dialogue with clients" (Grinnell 85).
2. It is important to look at both kinds of research while working in the social work field. If you only look at one then you will have a very narrow idea of the world and the people in it. "We can easily see how both approaches complement one another by looking at their respective epistemological origins and on their patterns of utilization" (Grinnell 87).
3.Going off my previous comment, both ways of research have through own focus point and that is a very good thing as it allows for a wider range of studies. "Both approaches make meaningful contributions to our understanding of the social world and, when used together, can obviously augment it" (Grinnell 93).

chapter 5

Thesis: It was about how to combine the two methods of research already talked about together to create a more comprehensive study.
Observations:
1. Mixed methods is more then a methods in itself being closer to a way of thinking about and utilizing methods. "In  this definition, the authors did not view mixed methods simply as methods but more as a methodology that spanned viewpoints to inferences and that included the combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches" (Grinnell 101).
2. One of the biggest benefits to mixed methods is it enhances a study with using multiple approaches to the research types. "in some situations, a second research method can be added to the study to provide an enhanced understanding of some phase of the research project" (Ginnell 105). It is not always needed but when it can be used it becomes a very good tool.
3. Mixed methods is more complicated the using only one kind as it involves an understanding of all kinds being used. "The mixed methods research approach is realistic for a research study if the researcher has the requisite skills" (Ginnell 108).

Question: If we were to use only one kind without knowing what the study was which would provide the higher chance of providing useful data?
