Interviews on how the presence of green initiatives effect environmental awarness
Interview 1
Valerie Esposito
I started the recording a few seconds in so we lost the very start but got all the good stuff
transcript:
Val: OK so what i was saying is that weave seen as a trend across the country that potential students are more thoughtful about institutions that they chose and one of the criteria they use are their stability foot print you could say in that they are thinking about renewable energy is part of that whole equation. So then you are asking when they get here if we see any sort of environmental learning though the renewable energy?
Me: yea, so what I was trying to figure out was is their a link between people knowing about us using renewable energy and the attendance to non required class about about nature?
Val: oh ok
Me: like their are core class that are nature based
Val: I think so, I fell i would see a little bit of an uptake in that. I think a lot of it has to do with how aware the students are with the initiatives that were doing. we do have good singe but
if you asked like ten people if the knew about geothermal I don't know how meany would say yes, do you know what I mean? So I think it could be a relay good tool but it would have to be done in a relay overt way that attracts attention of people that might not necessarily know about it.
Me: So are you saying that you think if the amount of information about it was increased so more people knew more about it it would increase.
Val: I think so like, this is geothermal if you are interested in this then class or whatever whatever could be a good way for you to explore related environmental issues. Sometimes you need to make direct links.
Me: So do you feel the renewable energy here is very important to the identity of Champlain?
Val: I think it is, Champlain is relay trying to distinguish itself as a sustainability leader. you know we have one of the only platinum lead certified buildings in the sate, and they did that intentionally as it cost more money but they were committed to doing geothermal and renewable energy on all new builds. so yes I think absolutely we have a commitment. School had already sighed on as signatory to reduce our carbon foot print by like 2050, it was part of this regional initiative by college presidents and even after the Paris accord president Laackman reaffirmed that and this year, hopefully, we are going to set actual targets for reduction to get to some of the levels in the Paris agreement.
Me: If you were to like pick one green initiatives we are doing around campus what one do you think is the most effective?
Val: I would say the geothermal, and going towards one hundred present renewable absolutely
Me: That is a good choice. So the next one is worded a little wired but pretty much what i am trying to say is, do you feel like the fact that the person themselves even if the person themselves does not know about it the fact that their are people around that do know about it, do you think that effects learning in any way? do you feel that learning in Burlington make people more aware of natural issues?
Val: yes I do absolutely, like of environmental issues?
Me:yea
Val: Yes, I think Burlington as this environmental ethos that you don't necessarily get everywhere else, and even if it is just you know what local foods movement is and you did not before that is a big deal.
Me: so it's like if you are studding near nature your more in tuned with nature as well
Vsl: that's right exactly, and just the fact that we have great view of the lake and just feel more connected.
Me: what environmental issues are most impotent to you? tough question
Val: That is a tough question. i would say right now, the politicization of environmental issues. you know? I don't understand why it has to be such a polarizing issue when we all need a healthy planet to live on. we are all living here.
Me: That is actually my mentality for why i am an environmental policy student because i am living on this planet. I want it to stay in good shape.
Val: Yea, so i think what is most worry sum is just how politicized it is and how decisions are being made not based on science or facts but on politics.
This was the stuff of impotent from the interview the rest of it was just on who else i should interview and some basic wrap up. for who else to talk to Val actually recommended my next interview be with a student who is not part of the environmental study stuff to get an idea what the normal student thought.
Interview 2
I had a short interview with my roommate Jonah who is a game art student going off Val's advice
Me: So how much do you know about the environmental projects going on at Champlain?
Jonah: Not much honestly, I remember us talking about the bees that they have over behind Parry Hall. Also their is a singe on the door to our dorm about geothermal but that is about it.
Me: Do you feel like this school has done anything to provided you with information on the green things we do?
Jonah: I vaguely remember so stuff getting mentioned during my student tour but other then that not relay.
Me: Has living in Burlington done anything to grow your interest in the environment?
Jonah: Honestly I don't go outside that much as i am normally to busy with school work or just trying to relax and not get to stressed out. With all the stuff I have to to it often does not feel like I have the time to go out of my way and learn about other stuff
While this interview was much shorter I felt like it actually told me a lot as it showed how most students just did not have the time.
